Design Deconstruction – Detailed and Thorough
Exploded views reveal how things work. Sketching deepens your understanding of spatial relationships, mechanisms, and design logic in ways photos alone can’t. Make the effort to truly study, not just document. Aside from this, it also helps to communicate with engineers, CMF team and project manager as well.
Objective
Building a good background knowledge of basic engineering solutions and production methods will help make producing explanatory drawing far easier. Sketching is not only one of the communication skills a designer needs, but also a good way of learning design. Breaking up the current products you are sketching into its constituent parts can help to understand parting lines, the various components and materials, manufacturing method, as well as the possible modularization or trim options. Building background knowledge of basic engineering solutions and production methods will push more in-depth thinking during the ideation process.
