Explain Construction – Detailed and Thorough

As a product designer, whatever you design will at some stage have to be manufactured. An exploded view drawing could explain how the separate elements of your design come together, and even in which order they do so. Aside from this, creating an exploded view during the design process is simply a good way to help yourself work out and understand your design, which help to communicate with engineers, CMF team and project manager as well.

Objective

Building a good background knowledge of basic engineering solutions and production methods will help make producing explanatory drawing far easier. Sketching is not only one of the communication skills a designer needs, but also a good way of learning design. Breaking up the current products you are sketching into its constituent parts can help to understand parting lines, the various components and materials, manufacturing method, as well as the possible modularization or trim options. Building background knowledge of basic engineering solutions and production methods will push more in-depth thinking during the ideation process.
